Green woodpecker

(Picus viridis)

The largest of the UK's woodpeckers, this species is easily distinguished by its dark green wings, lighter green breast, yellow rump, black cheeks and a striking red cap. It can be seen in open ground catching ants or in woodland nesting.
Diet: Insects (mainly ants)
